Skills Heroes

Where secondary vocational students compete for the title of the Netherlands’ best craftsman or woman in their field.

Skills Heroes are professional competitions for secondary vocational students. In around fifty different competitions, these students show the best they can do and compete for the title of Netherlands’ best craftsman or woman in their area of expertise. Skills Heroes consists of three rounds, the last of which is the national final,
Skills The Finals.

I myself have also been involved in these three rounds, in the years 2022 and 2023. Not as a competition participant within my profession, but as a photographer for the school Horizon College. No fewer than nine Horizon College students competed in the national grand final, Skills The Finals. During this last round of Skills Heroes, I photographed the students to digitally capture this important and exciting moment.

In doing so, I had very special experiences. Although I did not participate in any of the competitions myself, this has been one big learning moment for me. I got to know the settings of my camera better and practised setting my camera correctly in different settings, I got to see how different professions are done and I met new people from communication and media teams.

In short, Skills Heroes was an incredibly fun and educational experience for me, even as a non-participant. I am glad I was able to experience it.

(Due to privacy reasons I chose not to show any photos taken of the participants.)
